NC-Hierarchy Description

This document explains the hierarchical structure and data mapping of geographical entities used in Neighborhoods dataset. The data is organized into various geographical levels, each being a different type of geographical area. This structure helps in understanding the relationships between different geographical entities and how they fit into large hierarchy.

Hierarchical Levels
The data is divided into multiple geographical levels, each standing for a different type of geographical area. The levels are as follows:

State

Description: Stands for the highest level of geographical division in the dataset, such as U.S. states.

ParentGeoLevel: NULL (No parent level).

GeoLevel: 1

County

Description: Stands for counties within a state.

ParentGeoLevel: 1 (Parent is a State).

GeoLevel: 2

County Subdivision

Description: Are smaller divisions within a county.

ParentGeoLevel: 2 (Parent is a County).

GeoLevel: 3

City

Description: Are cities within a county.

ParentGeoLevel: 3 (Parent is a County Subdivision).

GeoLevel: 4

Neighborhoods

Description: Stands for general neighborhoods within a city.

ParentGeoLevel: 4 (Parent is a city).

GeoLevel: 5

Macro-Neighborhoods

Description: Are broader neighborhood areas, a higher level of neighborhood classification.

ParentGeoLevel: 5 (Parent is a Neighborhood).

GeoLevel: 6

Sub-Neighborhoods

Description: Stands for subdivisions within neighborhoods.

ParentGeoLevel: 6 (Parent is a Macro-Neighborhood).

GeoLevel: 7

Residential Subdivision

Description: Stands for specific residential subdivisions within neighborhoods.

ParentGeoLevel: 7 (Parent is a Sub-Neighborhood).

GeoLevel: 8

Census Tract

Description: Stands for specific areas for census purposes, within residential subdivisions.

ParentGeoLevel: 8 (Parent is a Residential Subdivision).

GeoLevel: 9

Block Group

Description: Are smaller areas within a census tract.

ParentGeoLevel: 9 (Parent is a Census Tract).

GeoLevel: 10

Census Designated Place

Description: Stands for areas named for census purposes, like cities.

ParentGeoLevel: 4 (Parent is a city).

GeoLevel: 11

Incorporated Place

Description: Stands for legally incorporated municipalities.

ParentGeoLevel: 1 (Parent is a State).

GeoLevel: 12

Postal City

Description: Are cities used for postal purposes.

ParentGeoLevel: 12 (Parent is an Incorporated Place).

GeoLevel: 13

Zip Code

Description: Are postal code areas.

ParentGeoLevel: 13 (Parent is a Postal City).

GeoLevel: 14

Core Based Statistical Area

Description: Are geographic areas defined for statistical purposes.

ParentGeoLevel: 12 (Parent is an Incorporated Place).

GeoLevel: 15

Combined Statistical Area

Description: Stands for larger statistical areas combining multiple core-based areas.

ParentGeoLevel: 15 (Parent is a Core-Based Statistical Area).

GeoLevel: 16

Data Mapping Rules

ParentGeoLevel: Shows the level above the current geographical entity. For example, a County is the parent of a County Subdivision.

GeoLevel: Shows the current level of the geographical entity in the hierarchy. For example, a city is at level 4, and Neighborhoods are at level 5.

The data mapping is performed based on the GEO_TYPE field from the staging data and the MetadataFileName. The mappings ensure that each geographical entity is correctly placed within its hierarchical context, reflecting both its parent level and its own level in the structure.
